Immortality was the last thing Tom expected when he met the beautiful snow-white girl with the maraschino cherry eyes. Oblivion is an urban dark fantasy/thriller that builds on traditional vampire lore, but infuses modern motifs of alternative lifestyles, sexism, ageism and the very belief in supernatural creatures trying to stay hidden in the rusted bowels of Detroit’s inner city. Oblivion blends vivid, supernatural images of vampires such as “Blade” and “Underworld;” and also contains round, dynamic characters that are haunted by their own decisions. Tom is a restless young college student simply coasting through a hollow existence of meaningless factory work and school. His whole life changes after a chilling encounter with the mysterious Chrys in a local bar. With snow white hair and skin, she literally steals the color from Tom’s body with the slightest touch; and Tom barely escapes with his life. That is only beginning for Tom because Chrys has changed him, awakened in him the desire for the human soul – to steal the very color of a person’s essence. Ultimately, Tom discovers that he is a rare male “Eternal” – a type of vampire that feeds on the soul rather than blood. He becomes embroiled in a turf war with feral vampires who want only to feed and destroy human beings. Another Eternal named Dahlia has brokered a fragile peace with the feral vampires and the rest of the “nightchildren” community of which she protects. And as Tom is forced to leave the visible human world he takes a prominent position in that war which promises the destruction of not only vampires and Eternals, but all night creatures that have lived on earth long before mortal man evolved.
