L. Frank Baum

Lyman Frank Baum was born May 15, 1856 in Chittenango, New York and died on May 6, 1919 in Hollywood, California. He grew up in an affluent oil family. Frank was born with a heart condition and home-schooled. As a result he was somewhat introverted and he grew up spending hours in his father's library reading books alone. He took a dislike to the dark nature of many classic children's books, so he would create alternate, "happy" versions for his nine siblings to enjoy. As an adult, Baum tried many career paths, but eventually returned to his childhood love of writing, which led to instant success as a children's book writer. In 1900, Baum wrote his acclaimed children's book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and its popularity led to Baum's creation of the Oz series. Several of Baum's stories were turned into films and plays, including his classic first novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
