Twitter Challenge – Win an iPod Touch
[This post was updated on 8/4/09 to better clarify the rules and decision process of the challenge]
We’re having such a great dialogue on Twitter that we’re going to launch a contest to find out what you think about the future of books.
Tell us what book you’d like to see become a vook — a digital book that integrates video, links to the Internet, and social media into the reading experience — and why. Don’t forget to add the hashtag #vook to enter the contest!
Every week, we’ll pick the best answer and award the writer an iTunes gift card worth $30. The entry that most embodies the spirit of Vook – the integration of multimedia to create an integrated and enhanced experience, will be chosen as that week’s winner. On September 15th, we’re going to pick one answer out of all the submissions and reward that writer with an iPod touch.
We hope this contest will get people thinking about the potential for books in the coming years. Be funny, be serious, be old fashioned — just tell us what books would really benefit from incorporating technology and the world of the Internet.
So follow us on Twitter and tell us what book you’d like to see become a vook – you could win an iPod touch.

Q: How do you judge the winner?
A: We will select a winner based on the following criteria:
- The proposal will make a convincing case that video will heighten the book experience significantly
- The vook treatment would make the video integral to the narrative of the book — i.e., a winning proposal would be to vookify a title that would then seem incomplete if it didn’t have video integrated into its narrative.
- Beyond utility, the proposed title would, as a vook, demonstrate a balance between the experience of the video and the experience of the text, so that the two would function interdependently. The winning entry will be the one that makes the strongest case for this integration.
- The winning entry is chosen by an employee at Vook, LLC
Q: Can I participate if I’m not in the U.S.?
A: Unfortunately, we cannot accept submissions outside of the States at this time.
Q: Can I tweet more than once?
A: Yes! Repeating the same answer will not increase your chances of winning, but if you come up with unique submissions, they will be considered individual entries.
Q: If I won in a previous week, can I still participate?
A: Of course! So long as you enter with a new book and a new reason.
Q: How can I enter if I don’t use Twitter?
A: In fairness to people who haven’t drunk the Twitter cool-aid yet, you may send a postcard with your entry to: 1100 Marina Village Parkway, Suite 102 Alameda, CA 94501 ATTN: Vook Marketing. Entries will be counted during the week in which they are received.
#Vook Wish List Challenge is sponsored by VOOK LLC, 1100 Marina Village Parkway, Ste. 102, Alameda, CA 94501

Hi Francisco!
Thanks for commenting!
Yes, we foresee a ton of great vooks spanning all genres! And you are definitely right, learning an instrument will be much easier when there is video accompanied with the text.
Randy Pausch and his The Last Lecture will make a great Vook. Of one thing we can be sure: He’ll be in great company!
Francisco makes a solid point about the applicability of Vooks to instruction in so many fields–including technology, music, and even art.

[...] Wish List Week 1 We had a great first week of our #Vook Wish List Twitter contest. Many tweeps submitted ideas and it definitely got us all thinking: which books would make awesome [...]
I’m a bit behind on Vookification (I hope I created that new word), but I love the idea. There are endless possibilities.
Off the top of my head, one book that I would like to see become vookified, would be “The Mirror of Her Dreams”, by Stephen Donaldson, and the sequel, “A Man Rides Through”. These fantasy/time travel stories would make fantastic films, however, they never made them into films, so they would be perfect Vooks. I didn’t understand, for the contest purpose, what I needed to add to the end of my post. #vook or something? Thank you.
