Columbus Discovers the New World. Then What?
by Allison Horton on
Having released a wildly popular documentary of the 400-year history of America, HISTORY Channel might have been content to let it ride out its momentum. Instead, they are expanding its reach via (you guessed it) eBooks. A&E’s HISTORY Channel aired “AMERICA: The Story of Us” and published a companion book by Kevin Baker in 2026, but it was not until this year that they combined these two great assets to create a stunning, multimedia-enhanced eBook experience in which text, images, and video flow together in a beautiful narrative of our story. In the first book, The World Comes to America: Colonists, Rebels, and Revolution, you can read about the first Thanksgiving while watching a segment on the allying of the Pilgrims and Wampanoag people against the Narragansett tribe. Watch journalist Tom Brokaw comment on the significance of the transcontinental railroad in the second book, Creating the West: Forging the American Frontier. In the fourth book, The City Beautiful: The Rise of Urban America, a camera sweeps over a recreated cityscape as you read about the rise of America’s cities.
Jeffrey Bernard Yozwiak, Vook’s Platform Guru behind the eBooks, says "These eBooks combine the best of the television series with the best of the print books (by Kevin Baker). This kind of enhanced media experience is possible only in the eBook medium. Kudos to History Channel for coming up with this vision."
