How to Export InDesign CS5.5 Files for Vook Import

Before you begin, make sure that there are no spaces or special characters in your file name. Use underscores (”_”) or dashes (”-”) instead.

To export from InDesign CS5.5 to ePub:

  1. Go to File > Export and then choose Format: EPUB. Then click Save.
  2. Set General Options.
    1. Uncheck “Include Document Metadata”. Metadata will be embedded when you export from Vook.
    2. Choose “No Cover Image”. You will add a cover in Vook.
    3. Choose “Based on Page Layout” if you’ve anchored your images inline. Choose “Based on Articles Panel” if you’ve used articles to organize content. (Articles are a new feature in InDesign CS 5.5.)
  3. Set Image Options.
    1. Keep “Preserve Appearance from Layout” checked to make sure InDesign exports your images with any formatting changes (resizing, cropping, borders, rotation) you’ve applied.
    2. You will have many options to style images within Vook.
  4. Set Content Options.
    1. Check “Use InDesign TOC Style”. If you created a Table of Contents style earlier (Layout > Table of Contents Styles…), select it here.
    2. Check “Break Document at Paragraph Style”. Select a paragraph style to begin new sections at.
    3. Choose “Generate CSS” and check “Include Style Definitions”. You be able to apply but not edit your styles within Vook.
    4. Check “Preserve Local Overrides” to ensure local formatting like italics export.
    5. Uncheck “Include Embeddable Fonts”. InDesign does not embed fonts in a way supported by Apple’s iBooks.
  5. Click OK.
